The BMW Z3 Story

The BMW Z3 was a range of two-seater BMW sports cars produced from 1995 to 2002. There were two models, the 2-door roadster and the 2-door coupe. BMW Z3 M models were introduced in 1998 with 5-speed manual transmission.

Production ended on in 2002, with the Z3 replaced by the BMW Z4 series.

A popular model, the Z3 gained notoriety for its appearance in the James Bond film ‘Goldeneye’ in a scene where Bond is driving in Cuba. 

The Z3 is one of few non-British cars to be driven by James Bond in a movie, and the first of three James Bond films featuring BMW after a three film licensing deal between BMW and the James Bond franchise that started in Goldeneye and ended in The World is not Enough.

The special Bond-specced Z3 in Golden Eye includes ground-to-air Stinger missiles hidden behind the car’s headlights, a parachute braking system and a radar contained in an LCD screen mounted on the dashboard.

The car also contains a passenger ejector seat and a self-destruct system. Though it is mentioned that the vehicle has gadgets, they aren't used in the film unfortunately. 

It is one of the few vehicles in MI6’s Q-Branch that was not destroyed during the film, memory more iconic cars having met sticky ends after their appearances. 

Unsurprisingly, according to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Z3; “The BMW Bond relationship wasn't well received by purists and those of the car world, stating that the Z3 should have had a lot more screen time after boasting about the weapons.

It was said that the publicity of the car was for nothing, however, this was fixed with the BMW 750il’s starring role in the next film, Tomorrow Never Dies”.

Sales of the BMW Z3 spiked as the film sat at number one at the box office. In the 1996 production run, more than 15,000 roadsters were sold out by the time the car was introduced. 

The BMW Z3 is now becoming collectable, and prices mean that they can be purchase for as little as £2,000, although low mileage examples go for as much as £20-£30,000.
