Temporary Car Insurance

There are many reasons why temporary car insurance may be needed but whatever they are, we are here to help.

Temporary Car Insurance Online

Temporary car insurance provides comprehensive cover for a short, fixed period, from as little as one hour to 28 days.

It is a standalone policy, separate from any annual insurance the car may already have, and the vehicle owner's No Claims Discount is not put at risk.

Temporary car insurance is useful when borrowing a car, lending a car, sharing the driving on a long trip, driving a newly bought car home, or using a vehicle in a way not covered by your existing policy.

Who arranges and provides this cover

Performance Direct works with GoShorty to help drivers find temporary car insurance.

Performance Direct is a Chartered insurance broker, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 307002). Performance Direct does not arrange, advise on, administer or underwrite this policy.

The cover is arranged and administered by GoShorty, a trading style of Complex to Clear Group Limited, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 751221).

Each policy is underwritten by your chosen insurer from GoShorty's panel of UK motor underwriters.

You complete your quote and purchase with GoShorty, and any claim is handled by the chosen insurer under that policy. You can verify GoShorty's authorisation on the FCA register.

What is temporary car insurance?

Temporary car insurance is short-term motor cover you buy for a defined window rather than a full year.

You choose exactly how long you need, so you only pay for that period.

Because it is a separate policy, it does not disturb any existing cover on the vehicle, and it does not affect the owner's No Claims Discount if a claim is made during the temporary period.

It is designed for everyday situations where an annual policy, or adding a named driver, would be slow, costly or simply unnecessary.

Temporary Car Insurance FAQs

What is temporary car insurance?

Temporary car insurance is a fully comprehensive, standalone motor policy that covers a driver for a specific period of time, from as little as one hour up to 28 days, without any commitment to a 12-month annual policy. Because it operates as a completely independent policy, any claim made under it will not affect the No Claims Discount on any existing annual car insurance held by the driver or the vehicle owner. Performance Direct arranges temporary car insurance for UK drivers aged 19 to 75, on cars valued between £1 and £65,000, with cover available to start immediately. If you need short-term cover for any reason, get a quote online in minutes.

How long can I insure a car on a temporary basis?

Temporary car insurance is available for durations ranging from one hour to a maximum of 28 days per policy. The driver chooses the exact start date, start time, and duration at the point of purchase, meaning cover can be precisely matched to the period it is actually needed. Performance Direct provides access to temporary car insurance with this full range of durations, and a new policy can be arranged if cover is needed beyond 28 days. For cover requirements beyond one month, an annual policy is likely to represent better value, our team can help compare both options on 01708 609 331.

What level of cover is provided with temporary car insurance?

Temporary car insurance is typically provided on a fully comprehensive basis, which is the highest level of motor insurance available under UK law. Comprehensive cover generally includes protection against accidental damage, fire, theft, malicious damage, and third-party liability for injury or property damage caused to others during the insured period.

Temporary car insurance available through the Performance Direct website is provided by GoShorty and underwritten by UK insurers. Your policy schedule, including any applicable excess, will be confirmed at the point of quotation before any commitment is made.

Who can apply for temporary car insurance?

Temporary car insurance is available to drivers aged 19 to 75 who hold a full, valid UK driving licence and have a permanent UK address. The car being insured must be roadworthy, hold a current MOT, and have a market value of between £1 and £65,000. Each application is assessed individually, and drivers who have previously had a policy cancelled, refused, or voided by an insurer are unlikely to be eligible for standard temporary cover. Get a quote online to confirm eligibility for your specific driver profile and vehicle, the process takes under five minutes.

Will making a claim on temporary car insurance affect my No Claims Discount?

A claim made on a temporary car insurance policy will not affect the No Claims Discount held on any existing annual car or van insurance policy, because temporary cover operates as a completely standalone policy entirely separate from annual insurance. This means the vehicle owner's NCD is fully protected when lending their car, and the borrowing driver's own annual NCD is equally unaffected if they hold one. Temporary car insurance is usually structured specifically as a standalone product for this reason, making it the safest way to lend or borrow a car without either party risking their accumulated no-claims history. All claims must still be declared when arranging future insurance, as insurers assess total claims history as part of risk assessment.

Can I use temporary insurance to drive someone else’s car?

Temporary car insurance can be arranged in the driver's own name to cover a car owned by someone else, provided the registered keeper has given their permission for the driver to use the vehicle. The temporary policy covers the named driver only for the agreed period and does not alter, void, or interact with any existing insurance the registered keeper holds on the car. Temporary insurance cover is for drivers borrowing cars from friends, family members, or employers, without affecting the owner's No Claims Discount. Get a fast online quote in your own name using the registration number of the car you intend to drive.

Is temporary car insurance suitable for collecting a new vehicle?

Temporary car insurance can be a practical way to legally drive a newly purchased car away from the seller before arranging an annual insurance policy. A standalone temporary policy can provide immediate comprehensive cover from the selected start time, giving drivers time to compare longer-term insurance options without needing to make an immediate commitment.

Temporary driveaway insurance available through the Performance Direct website is provided by GoShorty and may be arranged within minutes of completing a quote, subject to eligibility criteria. The vehicle must usually be registered, roadworthy, have a valid MOT where required, and must not be declared SORN. Cover may be available whether the vehicle is registered in the buyer’s or seller’s name at the time the policy is taken out.

Can temporary car insurance include commuting?

Temporary car insurance can include commuting to a single, permanent place of work when this usage is declared accurately at the point of quotation. Travel between multiple work locations, visits to clients, or any other business use beyond straightforward commuting to one fixed workplace requires a higher class of use to be selected when obtaining a quote. GoShorty's temporary car insurance quote process started via Performance Direct, asks drivers to declare their intended usage before cover is confirmed, ensuring the policy is valid for every journey made during the insured period. Accurate usage declaration is essential, a claim made for a journey that falls outside the declared usage may not be paid

What cars cannot be covered under a temporary car insurance policy?

Standard temporary car insurance is not available for cars valued above £65,000, vehicles that are SORN declared, cars without a current valid MOT (unless the policy is specifically arranged to drive the car to a pre-booked MOT appointment), or vehicles that have been seized or impounded by the police. Cars used for motor racing, track days, or pace-making events are also excluded, as are heavily modified vehicles and those used for any form of hire and reward activity. Temporary car insurance arranged with Go Shorty via Performance Direct, is designed for standard, roadworthy personal cars valued between £1 and £65,000, if your vehicle falls outside these parameters, contact our team on 01708 609 331 to discuss whether alternative cover options are available.

How quickly can temporary car insurance be arranged?

Temporary car insurance can be arranged entirely online in under five minutes, with cover available to start from the moment the policy is purchased or from any future date and time selected by the driver. Policy documents are issued by email immediately on purchase, and the cover is recorded on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) so that the policy can be confirmed by the police or any other authority if required. Go Shorty's online quote process for temporary car insurance requires only the car's registration number, the driver's personal and licence details, and the desired start time and duration of cover. Get a quote now and be covered in minutes, our team is also available six days a week on 01708 609 331 if you prefer to arrange cover over the phone.

What does temporary car insurance cover?

Short term cover through GoShorty is comprehensive as standard.

Exact terms can vary slightly across the underwriter panel, so you should always check the policy wording and the Insurance Product Information Document before you buy.

In general, you can expect:

  • Third-party damage: damage you cause to other vehicles or property.

  • Own vehicle damage: protection against accidental and malicious damage.

  • Theft and fire: theft, attempted theft and fire-related damage.

  • EU travel: some policies include third-party cover in the EU, provided the journey starts and ends in the UK.

  • Business Class 1 use: included as standard, covering journeys such as meetings and business travel beyond commuting.

Optional extras you can choose

You can build the policy to fit your plans by adding cover upgrades when you buy. Options include:

  • Breakdown cover (from £1.49 through GoShorty), including recovery, roadside assistance and transport costs.

  • Excess protection, covering up to £500 of your compulsory excess in the event of a claim.

  • Legal cover, which helps recover costs if you are involved in a non-fault accident.

Choose your cover duration

Cover runs from 1 hour to 28 days, so you can match the policy to the exact time you need the car:

  • Hourly: from one hour, for a quick, single journey.

  • Daily: a full 24 hours, a weekend, or single days at a time.

  • Weekly: one week up to four weeks.

  • Monthly: up to 28 days in one policy.

Protecting the car owner's No Claims Discount

The main reason temporary cover works so well for borrowing and lending is that it is a standalone policy with its own schedule, certificate and reference numbers.

If the temporary driver has an accident, the claim is made and handled entirely under the temporary policy.

The owner's annual insurer is not involved in that claim, and the owner's No Claims Discount stays intact and unaffected. This keeps the arrangement simple and keeps both drivers protected.

Who can get temporary car insurance?

As a guide, to qualify for temporary car insurance, a driver must:

  • Be aged 19 to 75.

  • Hold a full, valid UK driving licence (DVLA or DVA), or an EU or EEA licence with at least 12 months' UK residence.

  • Have a current permanent UK address.

  • Never have been refused insurance, or had a policy cancelled or voided.

  • Have no criminal conviction and no prosecution pending.

The car must weigh up to 3.5 tonnes, be valued between £500 and £65,000, hold a valid MOT, not be declared SORN (unless you are driving to a pre-booked MOT), not have been seized by the police, have no more than seven seats, and not be a rental, hire, imported, left-hand-drive or modified vehicle.

Factory-fitted extras, adaptations for a disabled driver or passenger, and LPG conversions are acceptable.

How much does temporary car insurance cost?

The price depends on the car, your personal details such as age and address, and your driving history.

Prices start from £11.72 for cover of up to three hours, based on the lowest sold prices between December 2025 and May 2026 (GoShorty).

Starting prices then rise with duration, for example from £21.87 for one day and from £46.59 for one week over the same period (prices correct at 02/07/2026)

These are starting points only, so the most accurate figure comes from a personalised quote.

How to get a quote

You can get a quote in under two minutes by clicking the Get A Quote  button above.

You will need the car's UK registration number, your personal details (name, UK address, date of birth and employment status), and your driving licence number.

Complete the online quote form, choose your options, and buy online for instant cover.

Your documents are emailed to you straight away, and cover can start immediately.

Why cover matters: the legal position

In Great Britain, a vehicle must be insured at all times unless it is declared off the road with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).

This rule is called Continuous Insurance Enforcement, and it means you can be penalised as the registered keeper of an uninsured vehicle even when it is not being driven, according to GOV.UK.

Insured vehicles are recorded on the Motor Insurance Database, now known as Navigate, which the police and the DVLA use to identify uninsured vehicles (Motor Insurers' Bureau).

Northern Ireland has different rules. Temporary cover is one way to stay insured for exactly the period you are driving.
