The Z1 Story

The BMW Z1 was the first in BMW’s range of Z1 two-seater convertibles or roadsters. As Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Z1 helpfully highlights, the "Z" in Z1 stood for Zukunft, the German word for future. 

And the car certainly lived up to this name.

The Z1 was produced in small numbers between 1989 and 1991 and has, as a result, become very collectable.

Known for its plastic body panels and unusual vertical sliding doors (which slide down vertically into the sills of the doors, the Z1 was the experimental precursor to 1996’s Z3 which was produced in far greater numbers.

Although initial demand for this futurist two-seater was strong – BMW having received orders for 3,500 cars before production began – demand dropped significantly, and BMW ended production in 1991. 

BMW was reportedly unable to build more than 10 to 20 Z1 vehicles each day so the car so numbers were destined to be small.

As a result, the cars are now relatively rare and becoming collectable with cars listed on the Classic Trader website https://www.classic-trader.com/uk/cars/search/bmw/z1 for between £30,000 and £70,000 at time of writing.

In terms of the selection of cars available, every Z1 car built by BMW was mechanically identical, and the only body changes are the interior and exterior colours.

Top Red is the most common colour you’ll find, with black and green coming close behind. Fun Yellow is a rare find, with later metallic blue and metallic purple also now highly sought after.

The interior trim is either grey or cream, depending on the exterior paint colour.
