Subaru was established in the mid-1950s in Japan after its parent company underwent a re-organisation process after World War Two. Its first vehicle was the 1500, which was released in 1954.
It is in more recent years, however, that Subaru has seen its greatest successes. In the 1990s the Subaru Impreza Rally car won the World Rally Championship three times which helped to give Subaru greater recognition internationally. The Impreza was first introduced in 1992 as both a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback. Its boxed-style design became highly popular with customers and the success of the rally car aided sales of the road version.
Subaru introduced the Impreza WRX or the World Rally Cross version to the market to more closely reflect the rally concept of the Impreza. The WRX is known for its high performance levels as well as its design. Later, an STI version of the Impreza was released which increased the performance and value of the Impreza WRX. Both the Impreza WRX and the Impreza WRX STI had many limited editions made throughout the 1990s to reflect the continued success of the Subaru rally team.
Subaru still produces the WRX STI to this day as one of its flagship models.
Although Subaru no longer competes in the World Rally Championship, its legacy will always remain with the competition.
As a manufacturer, Subaru continuously produces quality vehicles and has a varied range, not just the performance models such as the Impreza.
In the 1990s also the Subaru Legacy achieved great success as a mid-sized car that challenged the output of its competitors. Today the Subaru Legacy is still in production and it is a showcase of Subaru's commitment to safety with the various features it displays.
Other vehicles in the Subaru range include the Forester and the Tribeca which fill the SUV element of the market. The BRZ is also a popular choice in the Subaru range as a coupe. The variety of vehicles that Subaru provides is testament to its longevity and its place as an internationally renowned automobile manufacturer.
