Government launches new motorbike safety campaign

The government is launching a new safety campaign designed to reduce the number of road accidents involving motorcyclists.

Commencing this week, the new Think! initiative will involve radio and online adverts which focus on encouraging car owners to pay greater attention to bikers on the roads.

This is in response to the high rate of accidents involving motorbike riders, particularly at junctions, with motorcyclists accounting for 20 per cent of road deaths despite only making up one per cent of overall traffic.

As part of the campaign, bikers will also be encouraged to investigate extra training options and reminded of the importance of wearing appropriate safety gear.

Road safety minister Mike Penning said: "As a biker I know how much fun motorcycling can be and what a practical way it is to get around, but it is unacceptable that so many motorcyclists are dying on our roads."

This comes on the day that commuters were encouraged to use their motorbikes to travel into work as part of National Ride to Work Day.
