Cold snap 'could result in increased modified car insurance claims'

People in Britain may want to ensure they have adequate modified car insurance in place this winter as it has been suggested the cold weather is causing a flurry of road accidents.

According to the AA, an increase of ten per cent in traffic collisions has already been seen this month compared with previous snow-free Decembers.

The organisation claimed the latest snowfall in Britain is causing motorists to slip and slide on the icy surfaces, with 331 claims already recorded since the four-week period began.

Director of AA Insurance Simon Douglas said: "If the road surface is icy, our advice is to try to keep a gap of ten seconds between yourself and the vehicle in front to minimise the risk."

He added vehicles fitted with winter tyres are less likely to be involved in a collision.
