What is public liability insurance?

Although not legally an essential, putting a public liability policy in place or checking that you do in fact have the correct level of public liability cover with your current insurer, could make all the difference to your carpet fitting business, should ever need to make a claim, or, have a claim made against you via third parties.

Having a profession where contact with the public on a daily basis is carried out, carpet fitters and floor layers/tillers are employed to carry out jobs within the third parties home for the agreed sum or fee. Surrounded by the third parties property and possessions, should you make a small slip-up or accident and damage the property or injure the third party, you could be left extremely liable and open to extortionate claims.

Accidents can occur at any time throughout the duration of your work for the third party so you should always consider the potential and likely risks. Although it may only be an accident, small or severe, the third party is entitled to make a claim against you and your business for the accident, loss, damage or disease that they incur. You could be held liable should the third party make a claim, meaning that you could have to pay out hundreds if not thousands of pounds for compensation and court fees.

Having the correct level of public liability cover in place could potentially save you and your business from having to pay out extensive fees for what may have only been a small incident. Considering public liability insurance for your business, or checking that you have the correct level of cover in place is always highly advised.

Why should you have Public Liability Insurance?

Fitting carpets on third party premises is a job that needs to be handled with direct precision and care. Awareness of property and possessions should be considered at all times during the period of time that the job is carried out for. The smallest mistake, damage to property or accident involving injuries to the third party, could all potentially incur a claim especially due to carpet fitters carrying sharp tools and equipment.

Some examples could include, incorrectly fitting a runner or not securing all edges to the carpet fitted, meaning the third party could trip and incur an injury. Tools left unattended whilst carrying out the job could cause damage or injury to the third party or their property. Even damage to other property inside the home such as radiators or plug fixtures could all lead to a claim arising. Having the correct Public Liability cover in place will protect you from this.

If an accident or loss were to ever occur to a third party member whilst on the premises or under the care of your business, as a carpet fitter, you could potentially face extortionate legal fees for courts or compensation that could potentially harm your business.

Policies for carpet fitters and any other small businesses should be tailor made to you and your company’s prospects and needs. Should someone ever make a claim against you, each detail within that carpet fitters public liability policy will cover you from having to pay out the extortionate fees – potentially becoming the difference between your business being a success or going bust.

Public Liability Insurance will cover you from all types of third party claims. Public Liability Insurance will not cover you from claims made by employees, temporary staff, students, temporary apprentices or those on work placement, you will need to take out an Employers Liability policy should you employ or take on any of the listed.

In comparison to a public liability policy, if you employ any of the above from the list, you will legally need an employer’s liability policy in place.

Employers Liability Insurance is a requirement by law for all business that hire employees or temporary workers. Taking out an employer’s liability policy for a minimum of £5 million is something that is deemed highly required should you employ anyone to carry out work for or on behalf of your business. If you think you may need employers liability insurance or would like to check if you do in fact have the correct level of cover for your business, why not give us a call today on 01708 572 494 to speak to one of our specialist advisors.
