Classic and prestige car manufacturer Rolls-Royce announced a bumper year in 2011, with the firm reporting record sales over 12 months.

The figures were the best seen in the company's 107-year history, with a 31 per cent year-on-year rise in comparison to data from 2010.

Everybody wants a Rolls-Royce

Overall, Rolls-Royce delivered 3,538 luxury vehicles to its customers in 2011 - up on the previous best that was recorded way back in 1978 when 3,378 vehicles were sold.

Strong sales growth was witnessed across the globe for the company and while the majority of sales still took place Europe, there was distinct growth in other areas.

The Asia Pacific region saw an annual increase of 47 per cent, while North American sales were up 17 per cent and there was 23 per cent growth in the Middle East.

In addition, UK sales were particularly positive for the year, with annual growth of 30 per cent, ensuring the company remains at the pinnacle of the luxury vehicles market.

Torsten Muller-Otvos, chief executive officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, commented: "Our business is in excellent shape.

"We are developing our dealer network, moving into new markets like South America, expanding our manufacturing operation in West Sussex to meet global demand and have plans to develop our product range."

He added: "At the core of this extraordinary success is a dedicated, committed and, above all, passionate workforce."

The brand also recently announced the completion of global testing for its new experimental electric Phantom model, the Rolls-Royce 102EX.

First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in early 2011, the vehicle has taken a whirlwind trip across the globe as researchers have collated data on performance and efficiency in a host of climates and markets for the new prestige car, with the data set to be published in the coming weeks.
