Classic car fans drive Goodwood Revival to record popularity

Classic car fans drive Goodwood Revival

This year's Goodwood Revival classic motoring show has been the most successful to date, according to organisers of the event.

An annual celebration of vintage cars, aircraft and old-fashioned culture, the 2011 edition has broken records in terms of sales, with classic car insurance policyholders attending the event dubbing it the best yet.

The Goodwood Revival takes place at Goodwood Motor Circuit and is billed as a celebration of motor racing as it used to be, being the only sporting event of its kind to be set entirely in a period theme.

It invites attendees to dress in costumes from the 1940s, 50s and 60s to watch races involving classic motors such as the Ferrari 250 GTO, Aston Martin DB4GT, Jaguar MkII, Austin-Healey 1005 and McLaren-Chevrolet M1.

Among the highlights of the 2011 event was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the popular Jaguar E-type and a tribute to legendary racing driver Juan Manuel Fangio, during which classic motors associated with the sportsman were showcased.

The festival's largest ever Revival vehicle parade also took place, with 100 British-built Fords touring the circuit to commemorate the brand's UK centenary.

Other attractions included the Earls Court concours d'elegance, which saw a 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante owned by William Ainscough voted as the world's most beautiful car, out of a selection of more than 10,000 entries.

Over the course of the event, which ran last weekend from September 16th to 18th, more than £6.5 million was spent on classic motors at auction, with one dealer selling eight vintage cars.

Meanwhile, attendance figures stood at a record-breaking 138,000, with general admission tickets for the Saturday and Sunday selling out before the event began.

The organisers will be aiming to top the success of the 2011 Goodwood Revival at next year's show, which has been provisionally dated for September 14th to 16th 2012.
