Business Insurance - UK 'lacks required number of electric car charging points'

Britain does not yet have enough charging points for electric cars, it has been claimed.

A BBC study has found only 704 of these are established so far, compared with the 4,700 planned for the end of the year.

While the Department of Transport has plans to have 9,000 built by 2013, the current scarcity of such facilities leaves two-thirds of towns and cities with populations over 150,000 without one.

The broadcaster noted only 3,000 electric vehicles currently run on British roads, but experts expect 8,600 to be sold this year, which would mean 1.8 charging points per vehicle if the 4,700 target is met.

David Martell, of charging supplier Chargemaster, told the BBC the fear of being out of range of charging points would be a "barrier to some people being persuaded to buy electric cars.

The Nissan Leaf, a 100 per cent electric car, was recently voted 2011 World car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show.
