Business Insurance - Greater support for fuel duty campaigns called for

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has called on members of the public to show their support for ongoing campaigns aimed at tackling the increasing cost of fuel by businesses and day-to-day drivers across the UK.

RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning argued that despite a recent dip in the average price of petrol and diesel across the UK, the government needs to be reminded that motorists across the country struggle under the burden of high costs at the pumps.

Mr Dunning highlighted how since October 2010, for every 1p increase per litre in the price of diesel for UK hauliers, companies have been hit by additional bills of £389 per annum.

As a result, the significant rise in prices over the last two years now means businesses are paying an additional £5,218 per truck per annum on average - a situation which is unsustainable and could lead to many firms struggling to make ends meet.

He commented: "We must see the August rise abandoned and we are calling on our members to contact their MP as a matter of extreme urgency in order to swell the numbers of those at Westminster who are prepared to support the cause."

At present, 38 MPS have signed up to support the FairFuelUK campaign that is calling for the scrapping of August's scheduled 3p per litre fuel duty increase.

However, the majority of these individuals represent the political parties of Labour, the Democratic Unionist Party and Scottish National Party.

Meanwhile, FairFuelUK has been acknowledged for its efforts to inform the public policy agenda of the UK legislative process by being named the winner of this year's CIPR Excellence Award for Public Affairs.
