Gender-based insurance changes 'will affect female motorcyclists less'

The recently announced changes to gender-based insurance will affect female motorcyclists as a user group less compared to car drivers.

This is according to Brian MacDowell, spokesman for the Association of British Drivers, who also stated he is in support of there being a class system in place for motorcyclists.

Earlier this month, the European Court of Justice announced insurance rates cannot be decided based on gender or age, with premiums that favour females set to end in December 2012.

Mr MacDowell added: "We'd like to see the argument taken out of silly things like gender and age and put into improving your skills behind the wheel."

He stated if this was the case there would be fewer casualties because drivers would be more aware of what they are doing.

Motorcyclists should also have a higher level of skill than car drivers, Mr MacDowell suggested, because the test they take to gain a licence is much stricter.
