UK's top sports car to be named at Silverstone Classic 2011

Classic car enthusiasts are being asked to vote for their favourite British sports car of all time in the lead-up to this year's Silverstone Classic racing festival.

The organisers of the annual event are conducting an online poll in which participants must choose between one of 15 iconic UK-created sports cars, selected by a panel of experts, to determine which is the greatest of all time.

Among them will be the Jaguar E-type - which will be a major area of focus at the Silverstone Classic as it celebrates its 50th anniversary - as well as the Aston Martin DB5, Lotus 7, Triumph Spitfire, AC Cobra and Morgan Plus 8.

The poll will close on June 30th 2011, with the winner to be officially crowned during the Silverstone Classic running from July 22nd to 24th 2011.

Nick Wigley, event director for the festival, said: "Britain is famous for its sports cars but no-one ever agrees which one is the best. That's a long-running debate we now want to put to rest."

The event, which is now in its 21st year, is the largest classic car racing festival in the world, with around 800 rare cars taking part in races, while a further 7,000 will be on display.
