Skimping on maintenance 'could invalidate modified car insurance'

Motorists who cut back on vehicle maintenance in a bid to save money could end up invalidating their insurance, if the comments of one industry body are anything to go by.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association, skimping on repairs and servicing could turn out to be a false economy.

The group acknowledged times were tight for many motorists at the moment, but added failing to look after autos properly could prove to be a costly mistake.

It explained insurance providers can refuse to pay out in the event of an accident, if the car in question is deemed to be unroadworthy.

Technical services manager Steve Foulsham used defective tyres as an example.

He stated: "If you were to have a claim, if your tyres were illegal, then technically that could nullify your insurance."

A lack of basic maintenance may also increase a driver's chances of being involved in an accident in the first place.
