Motorists 'must be aware of autumn hasards'

Car insurance policyholders - especially those with modified modern vehicles - may be able to benefit from autumn safety tips.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice on making sure certain features of this season such as frost and leaves do not interfere with the good functioning of modern car's electronics.

Icy conditions can have a negative effect on batteries but keeping terminals tight and corrosion-free as well as making sure the tops of batteries are clean and dry could make the difference when it comes to life spans.

After three years, these elements should be checked.

Leaves are another danger area for modern cars. If too many of them get stuck in the plenum chambers and cause the drains to fill with water this could damage the computers which control the engine and the braking systems.

Those who live in rural areas should be especially careful during harvest time, when roads can become covered in mud, making driving dangerous, IAM added.
