Van Insurance - Van Excellence Scheme wins industry accolade

The Freight Transport Association's (FTA) Van Excellence Scheme has been honoured as the best new service at the Fleet News Awards 2012.

Launched in 2010 as an initiative to raise the standard of fleet service providers across the UK, the scheme also aims to highlight those firms which are going above and beyond in the delivery of well maintained and highly efficient light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

Van Excellence has been major success over the last 18 months, with its 100th member signing up in March 2012. Overall, 24 fleet service providers have already been accredited to take part in the initiative, while 33 providers are presently undergoing audit and a further 43 have registered an interest to sign up.

In order to become accredited under the programme, fleet operators must demonstrate a code of practice for their drivers, have systems in place to check roadworthiness of vehicles, driver entitlement, load security and other safety aspects, and meet the minimum requirements as set out in law.

Head of vans and LCVs at the FTA Mark Cartwright said: "This is a tribute to the members and colleagues that have helped to make Van Excellence a success. 

"There is still much to do but it is gratifying that our efforts on behalf of the van sector have been recognised by the industry. We are all honoured at FTA by this award."

Earlier this year, the FTA announced its partnership with driver performance and safety management firm GreenRoad to bolster its Van Excellence programme.

The company helps van operators to improve their fuel efficiency, as well as providing a 50 per cent reduction in collision costs after a driver has been involved in an accident.

Mr Cartwright said at the time: "[GreenRoad] bring a huge amount of value to the scheme in terms of experience and expertise, and their support is invaluable."
