FTA welcomes speed limit consultation

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has backed a new consultation by the Department for Transport regarding the implementation of new speed limits for heavy goods vehicles in the UK.

Malcolm Bingham, FTA head of road network management policy, welcomed plans to increase the present speed limit for vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes travelling on single carriageways to more than 40 mph.

He claimed it will be a boon to all members of society, not just the UK's logistics operators.

Mr Bingham also commented: "We know from observations by FTA members [that] drivers on these roads often become impatient and take unacceptable risk to get by goods vehicles."

Furthermore, he claimed a higher limit would help to improve efficiencies for vehicle operators and help tackle issues of congestion on the UK's roads.

The FTA has planned a seminar to take place this week (November 15th) to highlight new legislation specific to the UK haulage sector.

It is taking place at the National Motor Cycle Museum in Birmingham.
