Business Insurance - Tyres 'are underrated items'

Vehicle owners and operators across the UK have been urged to remember the importance of tyres to maintain road safety.

Matt Smith, UK director at Falken Tyres, said it is the responsibility of vehicle owners to ensure their car is roadworthy and safe to take out on to the roads, but one area where many people fail to pay adequate attention is to their tyres.

He commented: "The question is do you want to be safe or do you want to be legal? You can be legal at 1.6 mm, but there's a clear argument that the tyre performs better at 3 mm of tread - it evacuates more water and has more grip."

Mr Smith added that tyres are not the most glamorous part of a vehicle, but they are one of the most important.

Last month, Michelin's new Alpin A4 winter tyre product was highlighted by consumer watchdog Which? as one of its "best buys".
