Business Insurance - RHA hails Unite strike withdrawal

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has heralded the announcement that tanker drivers across the UK have now voted against industrial strike action.

Businesses and members of the public may be pleased to learn that Hoyer - one of the largest companies involved in the dispute - has rejected strike action. However, the Unite union has not yet ruled out other forms of industrial action, which could still hinder UK business performance.

RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning commented: "The drivers have agreed that strike action would be detrimental to the economy; we now have to persuade government that a 3p per litre increase in fuel duty on August 1st would be equally, if not more, damaging."

He made his comments in reference to the upcoming increase in duty that was announced as part of the Budget by chancellor George Osborne earlier this year.

Unite is one of the largest unions in the UK with approximately 1.5 million members in all areas of industry and business. It was formed following the merger of two of Britain's leading unions at the time, T&G and Amicus.
