Business Insurance - Potholes 'will cost £13 billion to repair'

The sum required to fix the UK's pothole-ridden roads could be as high as £13 billion, it has been claimed.

According to the Labour Party, of the 111 local authorities that responded to its survey, 92 per cent have a backlog that they cannot afford to clear.

More than 63 councils estimated the cost of repairing their backlog at £5.36 billion, which when applied to the whole of England, could cost £13.4 billion in total.

Shadow roads minister John Woodcock said that a scattergun approach is not working and that the government needs to outline a clear plan to tackle the situation, which frustrates motorists and cyclists alike.

"Instead of continually patching up knackered road surfaces with a bucket of tar we need a proper strategic plan for local roads which could save taxpayers' money a fortune in the long-term," he added.

According to potholes.co.uk, these crevices in the roads are responsible for one in five mechanical failures.
