Company car users can be among the biggest beneficiaries from the growing prominence of electric vehicles, according to an expert.

Lem Bingley, author of the Greenmotor.co.uk blog, stated that the level of incentives available to businesses that buy electric cars is much greater than the gains on offer to regular consumers.

He noted in particular that company car users currently have to pay a significant quantity due to the benefit in kind tax, which levies a certain amount based on the value of the vehicle when new.

By contrast, electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf or Renault Fluence have a benefit in kind rating of zero.

Mr Bingley said: "So, as a company car user, you can save a substantial amount of money if you use an electric car."

Last week, Elektromotive published a survey revealing that the majority of UK drivers would be more likely to buy an electric car if the nation's charging network were expanded.
