Business Insurance - Derby receives six-figure government grant for potholes

Derby City Council has received a government grant to repair its potholes and road surfaces.

The £515,780 Department for Transport allowance, according to BBC News, comes on the back of a report by the Audit Commission into the state of Britain's roads in May. The report found that while road traffic is expected to increase by around 30 per cent by 2025, government revenue will fall in the immediate term by 26 per cent, with a further 16 per cent decline in funding via local transport plans.

Potholes are a considerable headache for both motorists and local authorities, driving up the rate of insurance claims and reputedly costing councils more than £50 million in compensation annually, according to the campaigning website potholes.co.uk.

Michael O'Higgins, chairman of the Audit Commission, said: "Prevention is better than cure, but councils have to consider the safety and insurance risks of damaged surfaces."

The report also claimed that it costs close to another £50 million to repair damage caused by utilities works and that councils are not adequately working together, despite being responsible for 98 per cent of the country's roads.
