Business Insurance - CBI calls for roads privatisation

CBI director-general John Cridland has called on the government to scrap the Highways Agency in favour of privatisation in the transport infrastructure sector.

He stated that a regulated regional model for the management and upkeep of roads across the country would better serve the public and UK businesses, as funding gaps are currently holding back the industry from fulfilling the needs of the country.

"It's clear we need a gear change in how we manage and pay for our road network in the 21st century," commented Mr Cridland.

"A lack of investment means we are really struggling to increase road capacity, let alone adequately maintain what we already have."

However, Stephen Joseph, chief executive of think-tank the Campaign for Better Transport, recently told the Financial Times that any plans for privatisation of the UK's roads network are fatally flawed, as the proposals can never simultaneously benefit motorists, taxpayers and investors.
