Business Insurance - Business drivers 'mistrustful of speed cameras'

Company car drivers are less supportive of speed cameras than other UK road users, according to a new survey.

Data collated by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has shown that 79 per cent of British car owners endorse the need for speed cameras, a figure that falls to 70 per cent among high-mileage drivers.

Of those polled, more than half in this group believe that raising money is the main purpose of the devices, while they were also shown to be the demographic least likely to credit speed cameras with helping to reduce road deaths.

Business drivers also consider speed awareness courses a better means of improving driving standards than imposing fines, according to the survey.

IAM Drive & Survive head of training Simon Elstow said: "Many commercial drivers question the aims and deployment of speed cameras and much more work needs to be done to dispel their negative perceptions."

Earlier this month, a study by Total Accident Management suggested that general driving standards among UK company car users are "very good", with women likely to be slightly safer than men.
