The Porsche 928 was produced from 1978 until 1995. Amazingly, originally intended to replace the iconic Porsche 911, the 928, in Porsche’s own words, “combined the power, poise, and handling of a sports car with the refinement, comfort, and equipment of a luxury sedan”.

The 928 became the premium car sold by Porsche with the manufacturer’s management believing the car would have more appeal than the compact Porsche 911.

The 928 was Porsche’s first front engine V8 powered model. 

As Wikipedia states “By the late 1960s Porsche had firmly established itself as a manufacturer of high-performance sports cars.

However, following the oil crisis of the 1970’s many more manufacturers started concentrating on producing more fuel-efficient designs. In addition, falling sales of the 911 in the decade suggested that the model was becoming obsolete and a new ‘space age’ replacement was sought".
