What Should You Do if Someone Hits Your Car and Drives Off?

What to Do Immediately if Your Car Is Hit in a Hit and Run

Picture this: you’re parked up or waiting in traffic when another vehicle hits your car, then drives away. No details, no apology, no chance to exchange insurance information.

This type of incident is termed as a hit-and-run, and unfortunately, it’s all too common on UK roads. It’s actually deemed to be a criminal offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

At Performance Direct, we know how stressful this can be. Here’s a clear step-by-step guide to follow.

Car left damaged after hit and run incident

Safety comes first

  • Pull over safely and turn your hazard lights on.
  • Check for injuries to yourself, passengers, and others.
  • Call 999 if the road is blocked or anyone is hurt.
  • Don’t chase the other driver, it could escalate the situation.

Record the details

We know it’s difficult but if you can still see the other driver, try to capture:

  • The number plate (even part of it is useful)
  • Vehicle make, model, and colour
  • Exact time, place, and direction of travel
  • Any distinguishing features like company signage or visible damage

Also remember to:

  • Take clear photos of your car and surroundings
  • Save dashcam footage if you have it
  • Gather witness statements and contact info

This evidence helps the police and supports your claim.

Report to police within 24 hours

By law, you must notify the police of the incident. Call 101 or attend a station in person. You’ll be given a crime reference number which is needed for your insurance claim. You can also use police.uk to make a report.

Speak to your insurer

Report the accident as soon as possible. If you’re a Performance Direct customer, please call us on 01708 925 057, as soon as possible.

Even if the other driver isn’t found, your insurer can manage a non-fault claim and may work with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) to cover your losses. Visit mib.org.uk for more information.

Remember

Although hit-and-runs can leave you feeling powerless, you’re not alone. Your insurer is there to guide you through the process and ensure your claim is handled quickly and fairly.
