MOT Fee Review: What Drivers Should Be Aware Of

Mot Testing bay

Every driver in the UK relies on the MOT system to ensure vehicles meet recognised safety standards. While the test itself is familiar, the fee structure behind it is now being looked at for the first time in many years.

The Department for Transport has opened consultation to consider whether current pricing still supports the high standards expected across the network.

When were current MOT fees set?

The existing maximum MOT fee has been in place since 2010. Standard car MOTs are set at £54.85, with £29.65 for motorcycles. In real terms, that rate holds significantly less value today compared with when first introduced. Despite inflation and rising operating costs, garages have continued to deliver professional tests at the same capped rate.

Why now?

The MOT test plays a vital part in road safety. It requires specialist knowledge, calibrated equipment and trained mechanics. Independent garages in particular have highlighted increasing costs associated with delivering the test responsibly. Energy costs, diagnostics, labour, insurance and equipment calibration have all changed over the past decade.

With that in mind, the Department for Transport has committed to a measured review. It follows industry engagement and reflects a desire to preserve effectiveness without placing undue strain on motorists or small businesses.

What could change?

At present nothing has been decided. Any future recommendations are expected to balance three clear considerations:

  • Fair pricing for drivers

  • Financial sustainability for garages

  • Continued high testing standards

Some possible approaches discussed by motor industry participants include gradual price adjustments, improved consistency in pricing practices and continued priority on safety outcomes rather than discounting incentives.

Is the MOT still required annually?

Yes. Nothing about the test schedule has changed. Annual MOT requirements remain in place for most vehicles over three years old (four years in Northern Ireland), and the standards for roadworthiness remain consistent.

What does this mean for drivers today?

Drivers should continue booking MOTs as usual. There is no change to the current fee. The consultation aims to support the long-term health of the MOT system and the garages that deliver it. Clear communication is expected if Government policy evolves, and any future adjustment is likely to be modest.

Value perspective

A properly conducted MOT can prevent breakdowns, identify safety issues early and support responsible maintenance. When viewed alongside everyday living costs, the current fee still offers strong value for a highly skilled assessment and safety verification.
