History of MG

MG first began producing cars in the 1920s and had immediate successes, having to move premises in its early years to fulfill demand. Many different MGs were produced during the 20s and 30s, individual models being denoted by letters, such as the MGF touring car or a coupe and the MGC sports car.

The ability of MG to produce a range of different vehicle types aided its early successes.

After the second world war the company returned to manufacturing quality and luxury sports cars as well as other vehicles. The MGA, which was released in 1955, defined the 1950s for MG as it was seen to be the first car in a new era for the company. It was very successful, especially on the export market for its roadster and coupe styles. The MGA was replaced by the MGB in 1962 which continued this success.

The MGB Roadster was the first of the MGB series to be produced as a two-seater sports roadster which had classic looks and was designed to give a smooth ride. It was a flagship model in the MG range and received updates over the years such as with the MGB GT which was released in 1965. This was produced in a sports hatchback style and had greater space than the Roadster version. Versions of the MGB GT were produced up until 1980, such was the model's popularity. The MGB GT was again updated in the 1990s with the release of the MGB GT V8 as a two-seater sports roadster. The MGB itself was succeeded by the MGC in 1967. The C class came as both roadster and coupe versions and an MBC GT V8 was also released in 1973.

The 1960s also saw the revival of the Midget line of cars which went on to see various marks produced throughout the 60s and 70s. The Midget line were designed as compact sports cars that had quick acceleration and good handling. The MG Midget 1500 was created for the US market in the mid-1970s with large front and rear bumpers to match government regulations.

These cars are seen as classics within the MG range. However modern MG models have also proved very successful.

The MG ZT for instance was a modern update for the MG range as an estate car which was introduced in 2001. A sports version also followed however and for a time the MG ZT T was the fastest non-production estate car.

The turn of the millennium also saw other introductions to the MG range such as the hot hatch MG ZR and the family car the MG ZS. These were a new collection of cars for the MG brand which increased the type of vehicles in the MG range.

Although the group collapsed in 2005 MG still continues to provide a range of cars today under new ownership to keep the famous MG brand on the market.
