The Green House

This weekend I was in Southend on the East Coast shooting a video for a Rockford's Rock Opera ­ the ecological musical story. Since the project is all self financed we have to be careful about the money we spend and so the video director looked for alternatives from the normal commercial video studios where these things are normally done.

However I must admit, pulling up outside a very normal looking chalet bungalow property on a normal street, I wondered if he'd taken his money saving brief a bit too far? Were we to shoot this video in someone's front room? This could have been the 'concept' of course, The Cure once shot a video in a cupboard, but since the idea behind this creative was definitely not domestic, I began to wonder.

In we all walked, guitars, clothing, costumes and accessories in hand, through the hall (complete with suitably seaside chintzy pictures and china ornaments, through the kitchen with normal appliances - dishwasher, washing machine, microwave etc - through a sitting room door and into a massive, open plan studio. Basically the owner had completely gutted the building - save the kitchen, hall and toilet, and turned the interior into an expansive green screen studio complete with all the video, recording and TV equipment you could ever hope for.

It was all clearly sound proofed too but I'm not sure what his neighbours must think or indeed what view his home insurers would take. I imagine the owner has business insurance as there's no way a domestic home insurance policy would cover all the equipment, fixtures and studio fittings plus, of course, the liability issues of lots of visitors.

I wonder how many other seemingly normal buildings hide such secrets within ­ certainly this place was completely anonymous other than the green glow which must emanate from it at night.

The results of the shoot we'll see in a few weeks - being green screen there's lots more work to be done yet. Perhaps the video director will decide to super impose us into an anonymous looking bungalow in Southend.
