Fleet managers have been alerted to the fact that many of their vehicles may be travelling around the country on dangerously under-inflated tyres due to driver neglect.
Fleet management firm Arval's study of the issue found that 11 per cent of business drivers did not think about the issue at all, with 18 per cent only checking their tyres four times a year.
Similarly, an RAC check on a 9,000 strong fleet found that over 1,000 had tyres that would have failed an MOT and put van insurance premiums at risk.
"This example comes from a well-managed and maintained fleet, which is audited monthly, so you can imagine the level of the problem with poorly managed fleets," said RAC head of inspection services Adrian McCarthy.
"If tyres are not regularly checked, at best a company will take a hit on its fuel expenditure, at worst it could lead to drivers being banned or being involved in collisions," added Mike Waters, Arval's head of market analysis, according to Workplace Law magazine.
Earlier this month a study by Bridgestone found that just 6.5 per cent of vehicles had all four tyres inflated to the correct pressure.
