Tests carried out by What Car? have highlighted that 40 per cent of motorists nap while driving, with 22 per cent admitting to doing this more than once.
However, the findings also show that a tired driver performed worse in tests than a motorists who was 25 per cent above the legal blood alcohol limit, meaning that tired drivers can be as dangerous as drunk motorists.
Steve Fowler, What Car? group editor, said: "It's not surprising to learn that drink seriously affects driving ability, but it is worrying to discover that a sober person's driving ability can suffer more when they are tired. "
To potentially avoid a car or van insurance claim due to tiredness, motorists should take a nap in a safe place and then drink a cup of coffee or other caffeine-based drink, What Car? suggests.
The government's Think! road safety website states that males aged between 18 an 30 are the most likely to nod off behind the wheel.
