The Lancashire city of Preston is potentially set to see new 20 mph zones introduced to enhance road safety.
According to the Lancashire Evening Post, plans to introduce the zones in Greyfriars and Cadley must be approved by County Hall.
The zones will be marked by new signs and electronic smiley signals could also be used in a bid to stop drivers speeding.
Those caught breaking the law are currently liable for penalties, which may also impact upon their car or van insurance premiums.
A task group from Lancashire county council will put the plans forward next month.
Preston council's development cabinet member Councillor Neil Cartwright commented on the scheme: "We want to do it as quickly as possible. There has been a lot of local pressure in this area because of speeding cars and a lot of the roads being used as rat runs."
In related news, youngsters in Yorkshire recently launched a poster campaign in a bid to cut speeding across the county.
