Van Insurance - Mobile phone driving crackdown launched

Mobile phone driving crackdown launched

Motorists who fear for their car or van insurance premiums when around drivers on their mobiles may be enthused to read that the government has launched a new campaign to stamp out the offence.

The new Think! campaign is being launched by road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick.

He commented: "Our latest research shows the message is getting through to drivers but some people are still needlessly risking their own lives and putting others in danger for the sake of a phone call."

The campaign will consist of TV, cinema and radio advertisements at a cost of £1.5 million.

Motorists caught committing the offence were made liable for a £60 fine and three penalty points when the punishment was increased last year.

Earlier findings by the government have highlighted that drivers who use a mobile phone have slower reaction times than usual, with their responses slowing by 30 per cent more than their counterparts driving under the influence of alcohol - potentially risking a car or van insurance claim.
