Licence issues could jeopardise van insurance

Confusion over international driving licences could mean some drivers may not have valid van insurance cover, new research has claimed.

A study conducted by AA Business has revealed that many van fleet operators are unclear whether drivers have licenses that enable them to drive legally on UK roads and this could be putting them and other road users at risk.

There are over 110 different types of driving licence across the EU alone and this means it can be increasingly difficult for employees to recognise if drivers will be entitled to van insurance.

Paul Holmes, head of risk management at AA Business Services, explained: "If you are a fleet manager, how do you know if the licence you have been provided with is legal?"

"It may look bona fide, but you have no immediate way of telling without reference to another body such as ourselves. We get a lot of requests from drivers and even the police," he added.

Some insurers require overseas drivers to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) in order to ensure that policy holders are legal to drive on UK roads.
