Van Insurance - Hands-free warning for motorists

Hands-free warning for motorists

A leading safety organisation has warned that drivers who turn to hands-free technology following the introduction of new mobile phone laws are still putting themselves, and therefore their car or van insurance, at risk.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has moved to caution motorists ahead of the introduction of harsher penalties for drivers caught using handheld mobiles while driving.

Such levies will come in to force from the end of February, but RoSPA has advised that those expecting hands-free to be the solution to all problems are mistaken.

"When motorists use any type of mobile phone they become increasingly distracted by the telephone conversation and pay less and less attention to their driving,"said RoSPA road safety head Kevin Clinton.

"It is wrong for anyone to suggest that using a hands-free phone while driving is safe," he added.

"Hands-free does not mean you will get off scot-free. No call is that important that you should risk your life, or that of your passengers." said Peter Rodger, chief examiner at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, speaking earlier this month, in what was a clear warning to drivers seeking cheap commercial van insurance.
