Van insurance holders may be interested to read that auto maker Ford and a number of police forces have come up with a way of improving van security.
Working together until Christmas, Ford have given officers in five constabularies specially-equipped Transit vans to help in the fight against vehicle crime.
The models are fitted with a laminate over the glass that helps keep pieces together should the glass break and makes it difficult for anyone to break in.
"We are working in partnership with the police on auto crime prevention, using what we believe is the most secure Transit in the UK," stated Pete Hyam, Ford vehicle security engineer, based at Dunton Technical Centre.
Inspector Jonathan Baldwin from Essex Police said: "The objective of this working partnership is to reduce the impact of auto crime."
The vans will allow officers to explore break-in methods and identify stolen vehicles.
Inspector Baldwin added that officers would like to further explore the use of the laminate - which could help keep van insurance premiums intact should the product go into mass production.
Ford produced a number of vehicles for police in the US, including the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.
