Car and van insurance holders may have been some of the motorists recently found to be putting their vehicle's safety in danger.
Police in Lancashire have been looking to reduce vehicle crime across the county and have begun to send letters out to motorists who leave items unattended in their vehicles.
So far, officers have sent out more than 1,400 such letters to careless drivers, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.
Inspector June Chessell, of Fulwood Police, said: "I was staggered by the number of vehicles left with property openly on view and would appeal to motorists to lock things away in the boot."
She added that analysis had shown that vehicles left unattended with items on display inside were more likely to get broken into - potentially resulting in a van insurance claim for some motorists.
This is despite vehicle crime having fallen in the UK by 51 per cent since 1997, according to Home Office findings.
