Motorists, including those with van insurance, are being invited by the government to take part in a review of road signs.
The consultation will be the biggest undertaken on the subject in the UK for 40 years.
According to the Department for Transport, the review is necessary in order to make the most of the latest technology available.
Commenting on the plans, transport minister Rosie Winterton said: "It is vital we help motorists, cyclists and pedestrians understand how to use our roads - improving road safety and helping reduce congestion and CO2."
She added that the government was also keen to ensure the streets were not cluttered with unnecessary signs.
Edmund King, president of the AA, welcomed the plans, stating they had the potential to improve the safety of all road users.
Meanwhile, the Department for Transport brought measures into effect earlier this month that mean all new motorists will be given advice during their practical test on driving more efficiently to cut emissions and save fuel.
