It has been suggested that Britons are now turning to car covers to safeguard their vehicles from vandals - and potentially avoid car and van insurance claims.
Auto components firm Car Parts Direct has cited reports as showing a rise in the number of people using the covers when parking at railway stations, at work or in long stay car parks.
However, the covers are usually used to protect against weather elements such as frost.
"Owners cover their car when parked outside their homes. It helps prevent mindless damage and can avoid their vehicle being stolen," said the firm's spokesman Mark Cornwall.
Motorists looking to avoid a car or van insurance claim might also want to follow crime prevention advice from the government.
The Home Office suggests that motorists fit their vehicles with an immobiliser and remove valuable items from on display in their vehicles.
