Changing timekeeping 'could reduce number of van insurance claims'

Drivers - who have had to make a van insurance claim as the result of an accident on a dark evening in December or January - may back calls for timekeeping in the UK to be changed.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) claimed clocks should be two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time in summer and one hour in front in winter.

According to the group, the lighter evenings would make driving conditions safer.

It cited a study which showed 450 road deaths and serious injuries a year could be prevented if such a system were adopted.

The organisation also claimed when British Summer Time was a permanent feature between 1968 and 1971 the number of traffic accidents dropped.

Rospa chief executive Tom Mullarkey asked: "Why will nobody in power do anything about the untimely and violent deaths and injuries of so many people and the unremitting pain this inflicts on their families?"

In other news, the organisation announced it was conducting research earlier this month into improving the safety of young people who get behind the wheel as part of their job.
