History of Lexus

Lexus is relatively new to the luxury automobile market having been planned and launched by Toyota in the late 1980's. Lexus launched the brand with the Lexus LS 400 sedan. Although it launched in its native Japan, the LS 400 was also exported internationally. The LS became an almost instant hit and was one of the most popular sedans in its class, overtaking many of its rivals.

The LS has continued to be a flagship brand for Lexus with many re-designs over the years. It is currently on the LS 460 iteration and also has a hybrid LS 600h. Being the company's flagship brand the LS is constantly tweaked to ensure it remains above its competitor’s standards for performance and luxury.

During the 1990's Lexus increased its brand and its range of models considerably. The expanded range continued to impress customers and industry insiders alike. The SC range began in 1991 with the SC 400, a sports coupe, which shared the LS 400's V8 engine.

The GS range followed in 1993 with the launch of the GS 300. This was a sports sedan and demonstrated Lexus' desire to expand across the whole market – priced, as it was, at a considerably cheaper price than the LS range. The brand continued to grow and improve its range, firstly in 1996 with the launch of the LX SUV range and then later in 1998 with the SUV crossover the RX. The RX 300 was hugely popular as it suited the suburban market perfectly and was one of Lexus' most popular models.

Like many manufacturers Lexus aimed for re-organisation in the new millennium and this was reflected in its product range. This re-organisation began earlier, with the 1998 release of the IS 200. The IS range is more streamlined than other Lexus models and they are designed to be performance vehicles with quality design. The IS 200 proved to be highly popular with many of its design features receiving industry acclaim. The IS 300 followed in 2000 as a hatchback with the same luxury features and compact nature of the IS 200. The IS brand was revamped in the mid 2000's and received a resurgence in popularity accordingly. The flagship of the second IS range is the IS F which is a full high performance car. The high performance Lexus IS F still retained the luxury design of the brand but was intended to challenge its rivals' sports performance range. The IS range continues to be a staple of Lexus' lineup and is one of its most popular productions.

Lexus has continued to diversify its product range and has introduced a number of hybrid variants to popular models such as the IS 300h and the RX 450h. Additionally Lexus has begun to produce supercar models in limited production runs and now has several vehicle types in its range.
