sports car insurance holders may make their purchases anticipating a life on the open road, but they will in fact spend two weeks of their existence every year stuck in traffic jams, according to a new survey.
Research from Zurich has found that bank holidays are, unsurprisingly, particularly bad for traffic, with 76 per cent of the UK's car drivers caught in traffic over the period – and more than one in ten being stuck for as long as six hours.
And such frustrations could lead to disaster, as 31 per cent of respondents admitted to using a mobile phone while waiting in traffic, and one in five arguably contributing to the problem by leaving their car to stretch their legs.
"It's always best to check the travel news before setting out, but if you do get caught up in traffic, don't get frustrated with them, find a way to remain calm and alert. Risking a quick escape from a queue may look like short term gain, but could end up in long term pain if you get caught," commented Roy Seeds of Zurich Insurance.
Traffic could be similarly poor this weekend, with half the country expected to take to the roads over the bank holiday period.
