A year after it was first implemented, the Department for Transport has launched its Think! Rural Speed Campaign to highlight that the fatality rate on country lanes is actually triple that or urban roads.
According to ministers, rural roads can be tempting to drivers who see them as being safer because of a lack of pedestrians and traffic. But this is not the case.
Evidence has shown that there is often just one car involved in accidents that take place in country areas, showing a likelihood that these drivers have been tempted to push their cars too far.
Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "Driving on rural roads can be deceiving. It is important that motorists drive with as much care on a rural road as they would in a more built-up area."
He added that motorists should be vigilant for hazards such as animals running into the road, which could potentially see some drivers have to make a sports car insurance claim should an accident ensue.
