Britons buying a car these days are faced with the important dilemma of whether to buy a petrol-fueled car or its diesel-fueled counterpart.
Research from the AA has discovered that of all those planning on buying a new car in the next year, 46 per cent stated that they intended on buying a petrol car.
Only 28 per cent said that they would plump for a diesel-powered motor.
However, of those intending on buying a used car, 33 per cent said they would purchase a diesel car, in contrast to 28 per cent who favoured petrol.
Mark Huggins, managing director of AA Personal Finance said: "Diesel seems to be king in the second hand market.
"The swing to petrol for 57 plate cars could create a future supply issue in the second hand market and so used diesel cars may hold their value for longer."
When one is planning on purchasing a new vehicle, one's driving habits must be considered alongside cost, Mr Huggins said.
For example if one wants a high high performance car then petrol is probably best.
Diesel cars are often viewed as being less environmentally friendly.
