Performance car insurance may be affected by drink-drive laws

An expert has called for the legal alcohol limit to be reduced to zero for young drivers, in a move that may influence performance car insurance and other policies.

The chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, said reducing the limit for operating a motor vehicle would mean fewer road accidents.

He said drivers between the ages of 17 and 20 should not be allowed to consume any alcohol before getting behind the wheel and is calling on government ministers to make the changes.

"I'm aware that this is a controversial recommendation, but I believe it will save lives," Sir Liam said in his report, released yesterday.

This could affect motoring cover, with van insurance and motorcycle insurance also seeing potentially reduced premium rates.

Current drink-drive laws allow 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Sir Liam said this was too much for teenagers whose chances of having an accident were two and a half times greater than for older drivers.

Sir Liam Donaldson was knighted in 2002.
