History of Maserati

Maserati celebrated its 100th year in 2014 with the company rightly regarded to be at the top of sports and luxury car excellence. Over the past century the company has grown from a family business in Italy to an internationally renowned manufacturer of some of the world's most iconic cars.

Like many performance car manufacturers, the Maserati brand is synonymous with racing and the early days of the company saw it competing in both European and US racing circuits, achieving success in both. To this day, Maserati remain the only Italian automobile manufacturer to have produced a car which has won the Indianapolis 500. The classic Maserati Indy of the early 1970s reflects Maserati's success in the race.

Unlike many manufacturers, Maserati did not suffer too heavily in the post war years and was able to produce luxury performance vehicles after the end of the second world war. They continued their success in producing racing cars throughout the 1950s before focusing their attention on road cars.

The highly-prized Quattroporte model was released in 1963 and the four-door sedan was immediately popular. Maserati makes regular updates to the Quattroporte style of cars and it is currently on version 6 with a Ghibli model available also.

The original Ghibli was released in 1966 as a powerful V-8 turbo sports car. It was highly popular but bears no resemblance to the current Ghibli model.

Maserati was taken over by a series of different owners throughout the 1970's and 1980's before being bought by the Fiat Group in 1993 who invested heavily in the brand and brought about a new wave of enthusiasm for Maserati – beginning with the Maserati 3200 GT which was released in 1998. The 3200 GT was an innovative, powerful and luxury coupe which helped to reinvigorate the Maserati brand.

Following on from the success of the 3200 Maserati produced the Coupe and the Spyder. Both were based on the 3200 with the Coupe being a four-seater and the Spyder a two-seater. Because they were based on the 3200 both the Coupe and the Spyder are also referred to as the 4200. They were both released in 2001 with a revamp of both models following in 2004 under the Maserati GranSport name.

The cars ceased production in 2007 with the release of the Gran Turismo which initially came out as a coupe, although a cabriolet version was released in 2010, the GranCabrio. Both cars were widely well received, notably in the USA where Maserati is one of the most successful sport car producers.

Maserati continues to grow from strength to strength and celebrated its centenary year with a great future ahead.
