Manchester drivers, potentially including high performance car insurance holders, have generated almost £500,000 over the past 12 months through their misuse of the city's bus lanes, it has emerged.
According to the Manchester Evening News, 28,000 motorists have received fines of £60 a time for straying into bus lanes.
The publication reports that the cash raised will now be put back into the city's transport system.
But spokesman for Manchester Against Road Tolls Sean Corker said that he could understand why drivers would become frustrated at being stuck in traffic with an empty lane beside them.
"If they don't carry more passengers than ordinary traffic, then they shouldn't be there because they just cause congestion," he added.
A similar view is taken by the Association of British Drivers, which believes that bus lanes can negatively impact upon journey times for motorists - potentially including performance car insurance holders.
