'Don't risk invalidating insurance'

High performance car insurance holders who still use a mobile phone behind the wheel could find themselves out of pocket when it comes to making a claim for repairs to their car.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), a motorist who has a crash while using their cell phone could find that their car insurance claim loses its validity because the motorist was not seen to be taking reasonable care.

"Using a phone while driving is not only illegal, but studies have shown [it] does significantly distract you," a spokeswoman for the ABI warned.

Performance car insurance holders may want to take steps to ensure they are not breaking the law, as not only could their safety be at risk, but also their pocket. The spokeswoman added that paying for repairs or replacement parts could pose a huge financial problem.

The government's Think! road safety website suggests that drivers who use a mobile phone at the wheel have 50 per cent slower reaction times than those who don't.
