Fans of performance cars who are thinking that the grass may be greener on the other side of the channel when it comes to being heavily taxed for their motors may be wrong, according to the latest research.
The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) has said that 14 member states have some form of tax on CO2 for passenger cars, with France, Ireland, Spain and Finland having introduced such taxation in the last 15 months.
Ivan Hodac, secretary general of the ACEA, has suggested it may encourage performance car insurance holders and other drivers to look at more environmentally-friendly cars in the future.
"CO2 related taxation of cars and of alternative fuels are an important tool in shaping consumer demand towards fuel-efficient cars," Mr Hodac said.
The news comes following the Budget announcement earlier this month when it was outlined that vehicle excise duty (VED) bands would be changed next April.
Certain high-polluting cars in higher bands will be subject to more VED that they previously have been.
