High performance car insurance news: According to a study by Citroen, those driving in cities may spend up to half their commute sitting in traffic. The time spent at a standstill has increased by 10.9 per cent in the past two years.
Drivers in Cardiff spent most time sitting still but covered the longest distance of the cities studied, while Londoners have increased the distance they drive from 6.8 miles in 2006 to 13.2 miles during the rush hour. They spend an extra five minutes stuck in traffic, however.
The car manufacturer has said its new "Stop & Start" technology may offset the financial and environmental disadvantages of sitting in stationary traffic.
Manchester, Norwich and Birmingham were also examined in the study, which found commuters are sitting in a jam for 42 per cent of their average one-hour journey of 12.9 miles.
